Cyber Security Awareness

As part of our mission to educate and expand the knowledge and skills of our members in information security, we realize that it is important for us to be a resource to the San Antonio community as well.  Our chapter has developed two information sessions we provide without cost, one focused on explaining how to protect your online day to day life, and the Child Safe program which is targeted towards parents.

If you are interested in hosting a Cyber Security Awareness session at your business - contact matthew.hajda@alamo.issa.org (210-880-4250) to schedule an event.

"Protecting yourself online": This session is designed to highlight risks associated with online computer use with real world examples and recommendations for testing/fixing computer security issues.  These sessions cover Updating Computer Software, Ensuring Anti-Virus is working and updated, Phishing Emails, Password Security, Safety with Social Media and Mobile devices.  Instead of just "Why" we need to protect ourselves, this presentation shows you "How".

"Child Safe" : The Child Safe Initiative is a program designed to educate and provide a place that parents can come to learn about protecting themselves and their families from online threats, both as they exist today and where they are going tomorrow.

Tips
Here are some tips provided by our membership:
  • "The single easiest way to keep your kids safe online and away from adult websites on your home Internet for free. No software to install and provides filtering for entire household when configured through your home router."
  • "Traditional antivirus is no longer enough to protect from today' threats. Consider adding a firewall, antispam, and intrusion prevention for a multi-tiered protection solution."
  • "Do not open emails that you were not expecting even if it states it was sent from someone you know.  Some of today's threats use a person's contact list to spoof names and addresses for malicious intent"
  • Be aware of your immediate environment when entering your place of work. You obviously would never let some unknown person follow you in to your own home, so be just as vigilant and aware of your immediate surroundings when you enter or exit your place of employment. It is at this brief moment in time someone with malicious intent that is bent on stealing your data will be given the prime opportunity to do so. Without doubt once unauthorized physical access has been obtained, confidential data will be compromised....it is game over.
  • Enforce your company's visible badge policy - be pro-active about it.
  • Smoke break areas provided by a company are prime spots for obtaining unauthorized physical access to a company. Watch out for tail gating in these locations.
  • You obviously would not consider leaving the front or back door of your house unlocked especially when you are not there. Install a keyed or combination lock to your companies roof access hatch door.
  • Expect problems if you don't practice common sense while on the Internet. Expect problems if you are not vigilant in enforcing your own security policies and standards at your company.
  • Skimming was reported to have occurred in San Antonio in the recently. Here is a briefing showing how a skimmer works and what it looks like here and there is a presentation on Skimmer awareness here
